Protecting California consumers from dangerous autos

Consumer Action is pleased to support CA SB 686, which would prohibit auto dealers from selling unsafe, unrepaired recalled vehicles to consumers. The bill would require car dealerships to fix cars that have been recalled before reselling them to consumers.

Consumer Action and advocates support the California State bill requiring used car dealers to fix vehicles that are under an open recall before they are sold. This legislation protects California drivers from being involved in potentially life-threatening accidents. Currently, a used car dealer is allowed to sell a car as a "certified" used car even if it has an open safety recall. SB 686 would prohibit dealers from ignoring these vital safety issues and require safety recalls to be repaired prior to the vehicle's sale or lease.
