California Office of Privacy Enforcement and Protection
California was the first state to have an agency dedicated to promoting and protecting the privacy rights of consumers. The Office of Privacy Enforcement and Protection was created by legislation in 2000 and opened in 2001. Its mission is to enforce state and federal privacy laws, empower Californians with information about their rights and strategies for protecting their privacy, encourage businesses to follow privacy-respectful best practices, and advise the attorney general on privacy matters.
