WASHINGTON, DC—Consumer Action today unveiled a new educational video on its Vision Action Center to help glasses and contact lens consumers understand their rights and learn about the benefits of online prescription renewal services from a leading medical expert.

The new video, titled “Ocular Innovation,” features Dr. Darius Moshfeghi, a leading Stanford University ophthalmologist and eyecare innovator, and Consumer Action Director of National Priorities Linda Sherry, discussing how online prescription renewal technology works and how it can help patients and consumers save time and money.

Dr. Moshfeghi, who is both a strong advocate for new technologies and a strong advocate for appropriate oversight of medical devices by the Food and Drug Administration, points out the benefits of advances in ocular technology and explains the criteria that eyecare professionals use to evaluate innovations in the field. He also emphasizes that vision care telehealth services can be particularly helpful for medically-underserved communities and “levels the playing field for all socio-economic populations.”

“America’s glasses and contact lens consumers should know that through recent advances in technology, convenient, safe and cost effective vision care telehealth is now available, including online prescription renewal services,” said Linda Sherry. “Entrenched special interests shouldn’t be allowed to block these technologies just because it may harm their bottom line. Consumer Action will continue to fight to protect the rights of consumers to buy eyewear where they choose and, if they want to, take advantage of new telehealth technologies.”

This is the third in a series of consumer education-focused videos produced by Consumer Action and Fexy Media for the Vision Action Center. In May 2018, Consumer Action released two animated videos, one outlining basic rights for contact lens and glasses consumers and the other explaining how online prescription renewal services work. Consumers can watch all three of these informative videos and share them with friends and family right from Consumer Action’s website.
